Kindle: Spark the Love of Reading

Let books be your dining table,
And you shall be full of delights
Let them be your mattress
And you shall sleep restful nights.

As I've stated in my 'About Me,' I've become quite an avid reader and this was initially started due to the 'half-priced' offering of books at Costco (It's a great place).  After a while my bookshelves have become overcrowded and some books have ended up piled on the floor.

That was then that I was introduced to the Kindle by one of my Education cohort buddies.  I then did some research and eventually went and got myself an Amazon Kindle (newest Gen a.k.a Kindle 3).

It's been a while since I got my Kindle, but thought I'd share my experiences with it  for any of those who might be interested in getting one.

For those of you who want to get a device that plays music, videos and has games, this is NOT the device for you.  You're better off getting an Apple IPAD (or IPAD 2.0 or IPAD 10 by the time you've read this blog).
Note: I am not hatin' on Apple products as I have an IPhone myself, but you must admit that Apple fans must change their devices more than their clothes if they hope to be up-to-date on the latest and greatest product.

What the Kindle does provide is a screen that replicates the 'look' of a real book's pages.  This I can say is true and the reason why this is good is that the user's eyes does not tire as easily as if you were reading from a back-lit screen.  I'm not saying that the Kindle doesn't also provide mp3 playback and internet, but I can attest that it of course does not compare to the IPAD and that's because it wasn't meant to be comparable to it.

I think the biggest reason why I like my Kindle is the size of the device stays the same.  Many good novels are usually quite long and thus are most likely to be large and thick books.  This makes it quite difficult to pull out these type of books to read on the train or some other public transit. When you're on the train and trying to prevent yourself from PK'ing (falling on the floor), other readers will know what I'm talking about when trying to hold a book one-handed. The style I describe as Palm Open "Hang Ten," where the thumb and pinky finger are trying to hold the pages open can be quite a strain on the digits especially for those large, heavy novels tomes.

I found I've read a lot more books because the Kindle has made it easy to hold and flip the pages while traveling to and from work.

I don't plan to write all the specs down on the different kinds of Kindles so if you're interested I'd encourage you to go and do some research of your own to see if it's right for you.

I personally got the Kindle 3 - 3G version for the extra $50 so that I could get free 3G connectivity (you don't have to pay for a plan to use internet!) which allows you to access the basic websites as well as to download ebooks from Amazon while on your travels.

In conclusion: If you read or love reading...Get it!
